Before beginning her political career, she earned a medical degree from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and worked for nearly three decades as a family physician.
The La Libre Belgique publication listed her as its 2013 "Woman of the Year."
She grew up in Merchtem, Belgium. Her sibling, Eddie De Block, later served as Mayor of her (and his) hometown.
She and Freya Van Denbossche both held ministerial positions in the Belgian federal government.
