She was a member of St. Paul AME Church.
Her efforts to improve hair care for African-American women helped her to become a millionaire and were motivated by her own hair loss.
She married Moses McWilliams in 1882, when she was 14 years old. They divorced in 1887 and she later remarried twice.
She and Mary Kay Ash were both cosmetology pioneers.
