Humphreys Concerts by the Bay, Shelter Island, San Diego, CA, 9/11/18: The folks at @humphreysshows told me our show Tuesday was my 23rd performance there. The Large Band and I were glad to be back this year. Tuesday’s show was the 1st of our last 5 shows in a row on this tour. The Humphreys audience got our week off to a great start. We play the last show of the tour tonight, 9/15/18, for our friend @david.littrell at @chateaustemichelle, in Woodinville, WA. My thanks to all the members of the Large Band and Large Band Production Crew and drivers for getting us this far. I thank God and all of them for keeping us safe.
My buddy from The Bridge, @johnnydowers, brought his beautiful family to the @cerritoscenter Sunday. Keep up your great work, Johnny. I’ll keep watching. 📷 @kato.foto
Mike Young, @biggunmike1997, is another of my motocross heroes. He and Jayleen Willard, @jayleen_80, came to our show @cerritoscenter last Sunday. Mike is a former motocross champion who traded his racing life in April of 1997 for a new life full of daily challenges. Mike is one of the most positive people I’ve ever met. He and other riders, champions like @davidbaileymx, @doug19henry, @jessynelson79, @mr.efonseca, and @smagical, continue to support the sport we love and support each other and riders in need through @road2recovery, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping racers with career-ending injuries. Thanks, guys, for your courage, your strength, and for your constant inspiration. 📷 @kato.foto
Arnold McCuller, @arnoldmcculler, @arnomac84, in the hat, between @lukebulla and Francine Reed, joined the Large Band and me onstage at our @cerritoscenter show Sunday, 9/9/18. Arnold has sung on all my recordings since Joshua Judges Ruth, in 1992, and has toured many times since as part of the Large Band and Acoustic Group. He happened to be home in Los Angeles Sunday between his touring this year with @jamestaylor_com and @officialphilcollins. It was great to see you and hear you, Arnold. We all wish you the best of luck out there this fall with Phil. 📷 @kato.foto
Mark Kariya, @kato.foto, took this of the Large Band and me in Cerritos, CA, @cerritoscenter, Sunday, 9/9/18, apparently during a part of the show when John Hagen, @j_hagen47, is offstage. Where does John go? Thanks for your photos, Kato.
And get a good start we did! My friend @paulreiserofficial and his lovely wife, Paula, came to the @cerritoscenter show, and Paul was kind enough to introduce the Large Band and me while I sat next to Paula in the wings. I’ve always been a fan of theirs. I admire their work and their family. I’m grateful for their 25-year friendship. Being in 2 episodes of Mad About You is a highlight of my career. Thanks, Paul and Paula. @kato.foto took this picture.
@kato.foto took this of my heroes @realrogerdecoster and @troylee25 @troyleedesigns coaching me up before our show at @cerritoscenter Sunday night. Roger told me to get a good start. I was so honored they were there.
Roger De Coster, @realrogerdecoster, and Troy Lee, @troyleedesigns, came to our show with their families Sunday night at the @cerritoscenter, and they were nice enough to stop by the bus. At the 1983 Motocross des Nations, in Angreu, Belgium, I stood in line to get Roger’s autograph on my program. Roger was U.S. Team Manager that year as he has been most years since. Broc Glover, @mxgoldenboy, @davidbaileymx, @jeffward3x, and Mark Barnett were the U.S. team. And the U.S. won, beating the top motocross racers from the rest of the world. It’s a day I think of often. Troy has been painting my helmets for 20 years now. These gentlemen are such inspirations to me. I’m honored they’d come to our show. I’m honored to call them friends. Best wishes to Roger and this year’s U.S. MXdN team as the race comes to the U.S., @redbudmx, Buchanan, MI. @kato.foto took this just before the show Sunday night.
Thanks for your sweet post, @giselleeisenberg. I was thrilled you and your mom could be there in Cerritos. Keep up your great work on @lifeinpiecescbs. I’m your biggest fan. @kato.foto took this just before the show. #Repost @giselleeisenberg ・・・ What a special night! Cerritos Center for the Arts, Cerritos, CA, 9/8/18: @cerritoscenter was as close to Los Angeles as we came on our swing through Southern California earlier this week. It was great seeing so many of my SoCal friends. The Large Band’s Russ Kunkel, Jim Cox, and Dean Parks all live in the Los Angeles area, and it was great seeing their friends and families too. Thank you all for being a wonderful audience for us Sunday night.
Roy and Johnna Gattinella own @revolutionmoto, in Santa Rosa, CA. My friend Wayne Miller introduced us over 20 years ago. Roy is a retired Windham Hill Records executive who moved to Santa Rosa and opened a scooter shop with Johnna in the late 90s. Roy also teaches music business classes at Santa Rosa Junior College. They’ve always been so encouraging to me and supportive of my music. They were nice enough to stop by early at the @greenmusiccenter and bring a group of friends to the show. I always look forward to seeing them when I’m in their part of the world.
Thanks to my friend Cutler Durkee for coming early enough for soundcheck at the @greenmusiccenter and for bringing his wife, Jen, and a group of their friends to the show. Cutler is a retired Senior Editor of People Magazine. He spent a couple of days with my mom and dad and me in the spring of 1988 and wrote one of the nicest articles about us ever. We’ve been friends ever since.
Lovett's music career began as a Songwriter, but he soon signed with MCA Records in 1986 and released his eponymous debut album. While typically associated with the country genre, Lovett's compositions often incorporate folk, swing, blues, jazz and gospel music as well as more traditional country & Western styling. He has won four Grammy Awards, including Best Country Album (1996 for The Road to Ensenada), Best Country Duo/Group with Vocal (1994 for "Blues For Dixie" with the Texas swing group Asleep at the Wheel), Best Pop Vocal Collaboration (1994 for "Funny How Time Slips Away" with Al Green) and Best Country Male Vocal (1989 for Lyle Lovett and His Large Band).
Lovett has acted in a number of films, including Robert Altman's films: The Player (1992), Short Cuts (1993), Prêt-à-Porter (1994), Bastard Out Of Carolina (1996), Cookie's Fortune (1999), and composed for Dr. T & the Women (2000). More recently, he has acted in The New Guy (2002) and Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story (2007). His television acting forays include Mad About You, Brothers & Sisters, The Bridge, Castle, and Dharma & Greg. The Bloodhound Gang's song "The Bad Touch" does a reference to Lovett: "And you'll Lovett just like Lyle". Lovett was given an award called an "Esky" for Surest Thing in Esquire's 2006 Esky Music Awards in the April issue. The magazine said of Lovett: "The secret of Lyle Lovett's endurance comes down to the three C's: class, charisma and consistency... In the studio and on stage with his giant orchestra, he's spent two decades gracefully matching genuine songcraft with A-list musicianship".
Lovett married Actress Julia Roberts after meeting her on the set of The Player. Following a three-week romance, they eloped and married in June 1993 in Marion, Indiana. In March 1995, they divorced after less than two years of marriage. People magazine reported that the breakup was caused by career demands. They remained friends afterwards.
Lovett plays a humorous role in Angels Sing, a family Christmas movie released by Lionsgate. Lovett appears alongside fellow music celebrities Willie Nelson and Harry Connick, Jr., and actor/musicians Connie Britton, Kris Kristofferson, and others. In 1995, Lovett performed a duet with Randy Newman of You've Got a Friend in Me for Toy Story.
On March 28, 2002, Lovett was trapped by a bull against a fence on his uncle's farm in Klein, Texas, before being pulled to safety. He fully recovered after six months from a badly broken leg, and he began touring again in summer 2003.
Lovett was conferred the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters by the University of Houston on May 15, 2010 at its general commencement ceremony. His mother was in the audience as her son was presented with an honorary doctorate from the same university from which she had received her bachelor's degree in 1960. His father was also a graduate of the Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture of the University of Houston.
Lovett contributed a cover of Buddy Holly's "Well... All Right" for the tribute album Listen to Me: Buddy Holly, released on September 6, 2011.
In 2013 Lovett appeared in Episode 2 of The Bridge, an FX series, as Flagman, a Lawyer.
In 2015, Lovett received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Texas A&M University.
Since late 1997, Lovett has been in a relationship with April Kimble. They became engaged in 2003. They were married on February 4, 2017, in Harris County, Texas.
