American writer, comedian, and activist who is best known for having written the collection of essays Shrill: Notes from a Loud Woman. She is also known for contributing weekly to The New York Times as a columnist.
She started her career as an editor for the Seattle based alternative newspaper The Stranger. She then moved to Los Angeles in 2011 where she published several other articles for different press outlets including as a staff writer for Jezebel.
Her work has been published in several major press outlets including The Daily Telegraph, GQ, Vulture, and The Guardian.
She was born and raised in Seattle Washington. She married fellow writer Ahamefule J. Oluo in July of 2015.
She is also known for having won the Women's Media Center Social Media Award in 2013 and was presented the award by Jane Fonda in New York City.
