She then went on to attend the Université de l'Alliance Française in Paris, where she earned a diploma in French language, culture, and history. After leaving school, Lara began working as a reporter for the Sunday Tribune in Durban, and then for the Daily News and Reuters in Africa. She made a name for herself as a freelance journalist, working as a reporter, editor, and producer for ITN, CBS, ABC, CNN, and NBC, among others. In 2006, she became the Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent for CBS.
In 2011, while covering the Egyptian Revolution, she was assaulted by a mob of 200-300 men. The mob tore off all of her clothing and sexually assaulted her in the street while she was covering celebrations in Tahrir Square. She spent four days in the hospital recovering. She has won numerous journalism awards over the years, including five Gracie Awards, two Murrow Awards, and an Emmy.
Lara was married to Jason Siemon and since 2008 has been married to Joseph Burkett, a defense department contractor from Texas. They have two children together and Burkett has a daughter from a previous marriage.
