Known best as the winner of the 2011 season of the NBC series America's Got Talent, this jazz vocalist released his debut album, That's Life, in late 2011. The recording peaked at #34 on United States music charts.
In his late teens, he dropped out of high school to support his family and suffered a period of homelessness. In his thirties, when he auditioned for America's Got Talent, he was still living in poverty.
His Season Six judges for America's Got Talent were Piers Morgan.
A native of Logan, West Virginia, he spent the later years of his childhood in Detroit, Michigan. When he returned to his hometown in his twenties, he married childhood friend Jennifer Carter.
His performance of the Frank Sinatra hit "My Way" earned him the America's Got Talent championship title and its accompanying one-million-dollar prize.
