King Mohammed was named Heir Apparent and Crown Prince on the day of his birth, which is now a public holiday. He also also received an honorary degree from George Washington University in recognition of his promotion of democracy in Morocco. Not long after he came to the throne, Mohammed VI decided to address his nation via television making a public promise that he would take on poverty and corruption, as well as create new jobs and improve Morocco's human rights record.
