One of the sport's greatest all-rounders, he became the first player to take 400 Test Wickets and score 5,000 Test runs. During his career, he set the all-time records for career Test wickets and career ODI wickets, although both records were eventually broken.
He began playing for his local cricket team, Haryana, in 1975 at age sixteen. He made his Test debut in 1978.
He captained India to victory at the 1983 Cricket World Cup. He was selected as a member of the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 2010.
He married Romi Bhatia in 1980 after one year of dating; the couple has one daughter named Amiya.
