Mack was born to Lebanese immigrants. He graduated from Duke University in 1968. He attended Duke on a football scholarship and is now a member of the school's Board of Trustees. While at Duke he was a clerk at a brokerage house after being injured playing football. He started with Morgan Stanley as a salesman in 1972. From 1985 to 1992 he headed Stanley's Worldwide Taxable Fixed Income Division and became a member of the board of directors in 1987. Mack became chairman of the operating committee in 1992 and was named the President of Morgan Stanley in 1993. He let in 2001 after getting involved in a power struggle with Phil Purcell. Mack became the CEO of Credit Suisse First Boston. In 2005 he returned to Morgan Stanley as chief executive officer and chairman of the board. In 2006 he earned over $41 million. He retired as CEO in late 2009 and continues to be a Senior Advisor to the firm.
