He lived at a Catholic monastery before earning his Masters degree in Theology from St. John's University.
He was won numerous awards for his work in the field of religious studies, including the Martin E. Marty Award for the Public Understanding of Religion from the American Academy of Religion.
He married Dr. Jeanette P. Esposito in the 60's.
He and philosopher Daniel N Robinson have both taught at Georgetown University.
