Joan Tisch inherited her fortune from her late husband Bob, who with his brother Laurence started Loews Corp as a New Jersey hotel venture in 1946. Joan is the largest individual shareholder (with 6%) of Loews, an insurance firm that also owns drilling rigs, natural gas pipelines and runs hotels. She inherited 50% of the New York Giants football team from her husband Bob (d. 2005), who had bought the stake for $75 million in 1991. Her son Steve is chairman and executive vice president of the NFL's Giants, which Forbes values at $3.3 billion. Joan's sister-in law Wilma Tisch is also a billionaire; Wilma's son James has been president and CEO of Loews since 1998.

Tisch was born to Howard N. Hyman and his wife, Marie Ziegler. Her Father was a Manhattan dentist who helped disabled war veterans attend theater and sporting events. He persuaded Jack Mara, then President of the New York Giants, to donate 400 seats for each home game to disabled fans and their companions, according to a news release from Loews upon his death in 1981. Her mother was born in Germany. In 1948, she received a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Michigan and married Preston Robert "Bob" Tisch (1926–2005) the same year.
