Painter and Sculptor whose humanistic aesthetic incorporated elements of low art. Also known for his collaboration with musician Jasun Martz on "The Pillory," an avant-garde symphony.
He studied painting at the Academie Julian in Paris.
He coined the term "Art Brut" to describe the raw, nontraditional art created by groups such as mental institution patients, children, and prisoners.
He lived and died alone in Paris. His last work, "Monument With Standing Beast," was created one year prior to his death.
He was influenced by the work of Vincent Van Gogh.
