American author best known for his New York Times bestselling novel Thirteen Reasons Why. Asher is also known for a co-written work titled The Future of Us. In 2017, Thirteen Reasons Why was adapted into a successful Netflix series.
After graduating from California's Cuesta Community College and before pursuing a full-time writing career, he briefly studied elementary education at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo.
ABC's mid-1990s teen drama, My So-Called Life, greatly influenced Asher's work in the young adult fiction genre.
He has a brother named Nate Asher. In late 2010, he and his wife Joan Marie welcomed a son named Isaiah.
Author Sherman Alexie publicly praised Asher's book Thirteen Reasons Why.
