Born James R. Leininger in 1944, he took both his Bachelor's and Master's degree from Indiana University, in 1965 and 1969, respectfully. Upon graduation, he spent some time working as an emergency room doctor, but started to accumulate his net worth of $1.3 billion when he started KCI in 1976. However, he is no longer owner of the company that he set up in a one-bedroom apartment.

In November 2012, a consortium of private equity firms headed by Apax Partners inked a $6.3 billion acquisition of the company. Up to that point, Leininger was the largest individual shareholder and then he had to sell his stake as Apax took KCI private. But still, he continues to serve as Chairman Emeritus on the company's Board of Directors. In addition to KCI, Leininger also cofounded Renal Care Group and ATX Technologies, where he served on the Board of Directors from 1994.
