Former archaeologist known for investigating the Tabby ruins at Elizafield Plantation in Georgia.
He apprenticed under Arthur Randolph Kelly at the Ocmulgee National Monument in Macon before getting his start.
He was the principal investigator during the first large scale excavations at Poverty Point, a project that, with breaks, continued until his death.
He was born in Water Valley, Mississippi.
He and Robert Braidwood were both celebrated archeologists.
