American politician and United States National Security Advisor to President Joe Biden since January of 2021. Previously, he was Director of Policy for Barack Obama, National Security Advisor to then Vice President Biden and Deputy Chief of Staff to Secretary Hillary Clinton at the U.S. Department of State. While working for President Biden, he made many efforts to establish peaceful communications between the U.S. and former allies, and threatened repercussions for Russia and China.

He grew up in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He graduated from Southwest High School in 1994 and went on to attend Yale University where he majored in International Studies and Political Science. He won a Rhodes scholarship to attend Magdalen College, Oxford, graduating with a Master of Philosophy. He achieved his Juris Doctor from Yale in 2003. After graduating, he clerked for various judges and practiced and taught law. It was when he worked as chief counsel to Senator Amy Klobuchar that he was introduced to Hillary Clinton.

He has been a visiting professor at Yale Law School. In high school, he was a Coca-Cola Scholar, debate champion, president of the student council, and voted "most likely to succeed" in his class. It was his job to prepare Obama and Clinton for debates. He played a role in U.S. foreign policy decisions regarding Libya, Syria, and Myanmar.
