After serving in the US Army Air Force during World War Two, he attended the University of Minnesota, where he met up with an old high-school friend, Peter Graves. After graduation, they moved to Hollywood, where Jack worked as a carhop and Graves drove a cab. Jack did not achieve success as an actor, but instead became a stage manager and then a director. He won an Emmy Award for Best Direction of a Single Program of a Dramatic Series in 1959 and went on to direct films featuring A-list talent in the 1960s. He moved back to TV in the 1970s, while occasionally directing a feature film. Jack Smight passed away from cancer on September 1, 2003 in Los Angeles, California at the age of 78.

Smight was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota and went to school with Future actor Peter Graves. His film credits include The Traveling Executioner, No Way to Treat a Lady, Rabbit, Run, Loving Couples, Midway, Harper, Airport 1975, Damnation Alley and the Emmy Award-winning Eddie as well as many episodes of television series such as The Twilight Zone; The Alfred Hitchcock Hour; and Columbo: Dead Weight. He also directed the 1960 Broadway play The 49th Cousin and composed the music for the film adaptation of Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry.
