He came down with an illness while deployed and was removed from combat; Tolkien was not on the battlefield when most of his battalion lost their lives. While recovering from his illness, Tolkien began writing "The Book of Lost Tales". After the war ended, Tolkien found work with the Oxford English Dictionary and soon became a professor at the University of Leeds. Later, he began teaching at Merton College, Oxford, until his retirement in the late '50s. His first work of published fiction was 1936's "Songs for the Philologists", which he worked on with E.V. Gordon and several others. A year later, he published "The Hobbit". It took almost two decades for Tolkien to publish "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy. "The Fellowship of the Rings" and "The Two Towers" were published in 1954, with "The Return of the Kings" coming out a year later. Tolkien earned the title of Commander of the Order of the British Empire in early 1972. Several of his works were published after his death, including his well-received book "The Silmarillion". He is considered one of the best British writers of his time and continues to be one of the top-earning dead celebrities. Tolkien was married to his wife, Edith Bratt, from 1916 until 1972. They had four children together. Tolkien died on September 2, 1973, in Bournemouth, Dorset, England, when he was 81 years old.
