The policy of Philippine Martial Law allowed her a great share of her husband's political power. She served for several years in the Philippine House of Representatives.
In 1954, she married Ferdinand Marcos, who was, at that time, a congressman for the Nacionalista Party. The couple raised two daughters and a son.
Her husband was accused of the murder of political dissident Benigno Aquino, Jr.
