Proponent of the Italian Modernist Movement. Designed decorative furniture and objects in addition to designing buildings.
He graduated from Politecnico di Milano with a degree in engineering in 1928 and from IUAV in 1949 with a degree in architecture. He pioneered such prominent events as CIAM and the INU conferences.
He and Luigi Caccia Dominioni founded the Azucena Agency, a design firm, in 1947.
He came from a line of Architects that included his father, Arnaldo Gardella, and his namesake, Ignazio Gardella, Sr. He first entered into professional architecture by working with his father.
He and Frank Gehry were contemporaries.
