A twentieth-century Brazilian poet and author, she is best known for works that address themes of insanity, intimacy, and the supernatural. Her most famous works of poetry and fiction include Cartas de um sedutor (Letters from a Seducer) and A obscena senhora D (The Obscene Madame D).
She was educated at Mackenzie Presbyterian Institute in Sao Paulo, and she later studied law.
Her poems were set to music by Adoniron Barbosa and other composers.
Her later publications, like the works of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, contain elements of magical realism.
