In the early 1990s, he and Ihor Kolomoysky founded PrivatBank, which grew to become a major bank in Ukraine, handling more than a third of private deposits and serving half of the country's population. In 2016, the Ukrainian government nationalized the bank. Boholyubov has other business interests, including an oil business and ferroalloys manufacturer. In November 2016, he agreed to sell his Australian ferroalloys company Consolidated Minerals to China's Tian Yuan Manganese. He is also a generous donor to Jewish causes.
