Gerard Louis-Dreyfus was best known for running a sprawling family conglomerate, founded by his great-grandfather back in 1851. Gerard's father, Pierre Louis-Dreyfus, not only headed the Louis Dreyfus group, but he also fought in the French Resistance during World War II. Gerard moved to the U.S. in 1940 with his mother after her divorce from Pierre. He adopted the name William as a sign of his integration into American society in 1945.

A graduate of Duke University and Duke University School of Law, Louis-Dreyfus first spent time working at the New York law firm of Dewey Ballantine, and then he joined Louis Dreyfus in 1965. Over the years, he climbed up the ladder at the company and eventually took the lead of the Louis Dreyfus group.
