Gerard Louis-Dreyfus was best known for running a sprawling family conglomerate, founded by his great-grandfather back in 1851. Gerard's father, Pierre Louis-Dreyfus, not only headed the Louis Dreyfus group, but he also fought in the French Resistance during World War II. Gerard moved to the U.S. in 1940 with his mother after her divorce from Pierre. He adopted the name William as a sign of his integration into American society in 1945.
A graduate of Duke University and Duke University School of Law, Louis-Dreyfus first spent time working at the New York law firm of Dewey Ballantine, and then he joined Louis Dreyfus in 1965. Over the years, he climbed up the ladder at the company and eventually took the lead of the Louis Dreyfus group. In addition to his work in the family conglomerate, he is also a poet who chaired the Poetry Society of America from 1998-2008. His poems were published in such publications as The Hudson Review. He was married twice and a father of three. He is perhaps most famous in the U.S. for being the father of award winning actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Gerard Louis-Dreyfus died on September 16, 2016.
