An American ferrous metallurgist. In his career he had a reputation for producing high grade steel forgings and castings for guns, armor, locomotive tires, and large forgings.
He worked in the art department of the Philadelphia North American, a daily morning newspaper.
He headed the iron and steel division of the Bureau of Mines.
His first wife, Anne, died in 1936.
Like Francis Crick, he too studied crystallography.
