Eclectic abstract painter who received the Vladimir Nazor Award for lifetime achievement in 1990. His earliest work was focused on still lifes and calligraphic brushwork, while his later work focused on texture and mythical motifs.
He studied at the Budapest Academy of Fine Arts and at the Zagreb Academy of Fine Arts. He was also mentored by the famed Đuro Tiljak and was employed by the studio of Krsto Hegedušić.
He became a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb.
He was born into Croatian nobility and was exposed to many different cultures and languages as a child.
He and Ivan Rein received their artistic training at the same school.
