Remembered for his decades-long collaboration with fellow English Comedian Eric Morecambe, he was associated with several popular comedy programs on the ATV, BBC, and ITV networks. He and Morecambe were particularly adored among British audiences for their Christmas comedy specials.
He began his entertainment career as a music hall performer; later, he contributed to a comedic BBC radio program called Band Waggon.
His comedic memoir, Still on My Way to Hollywood, was published in 1990.
He and his four siblings grew up in Leeds, England. His more than four-decade marriage to Dancer Doreen Blythe produced no children.
In honor of Wise's late comedy partner Eric Morecambe, English Comedian Ben Elton hosted a 1994 BBC special titled Bring Me Sunshine.
