La Salle later earned his bachelor's degree at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. After graduation, he landed a part in the production of "Henry V" and began finding consistent work on stage and in soap operas. In 1988, La Salle scored a role for which he is still remembered today, playing Darryl in the comedy film "Coming to America" with Eddie Murphy. Six years later, he began starring in NBC's new series "ER" as Dr. Peter Benton. La Salle stayed with the show until the eighth season, though he did return for three episodes during the final season in 2009.
