Latvian composer, conductor, and music critic whose only opera "RoÅ¾ainÄs dienas" remained unfinished at the time of his death at age 34. His work emulated both romanticism and nationalism.
He was diagnosed as being allergic to sunlight and spent his first five years in a dark room. He was primarily influenced by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and Jean Sibelius.
He was forced to give music lessons because of financial hardships.
He was born into the family of a rural educator. His parents were very musical and ensured that their son was educated early on. He married Marija Deidere in 1903.
He and Bela Bartok were both internationally acclaimed composers from Europe.
