English clergyman and professor who served as Provost of Oriel College, Oxford and famously opposed the Oxford Movement.
He graduated from St John's College, Oxford, in 1811 and served as vicar of St. Mary's, Oxford, during the 1820s.
He published several of his most famous sermons and also edited the poetic works of John Milton.
He married Mary Ann Buckle in 1828. Together, they had five children.
He greatly influenced the religious views and preaching methods of John Henry Newman, who succeeded him as Vicar of St. Mary's, Oxford.
