Award-winning musician who became known for mixing Latin rhythms with jazz piano and instrumental solos.
He was 11 when he first performed at Carnegie Hall.
He won the Grammy Award for Best Latin Recording in 1974 for The Sun of Latin Music, becoming the first Latin musician to do so.
His brother was salsa-music specialist Charlie Palmieri. They would enter talent contests together when they were lads.
He was heavily influenced by McCoy Tyner and Thelonious Monk.
