Malayan physician primarily known for his advocation for wearing masks during the epidemic of Manchuria and Mongolia back in 1910. He later became the first Malayan to be nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

He attended the Institute for Medical Research in Kuala Lumpur as a research student. He would eventually create the Anti-Opium Association in Penang, Malaysia. During the spring of 1906, he organized a nationwide anti-opium conference that nearly 3,000 people attended.

He was the first medical student of Chinese descent to attend the University of Cambridge in England. He was also a founding member and the first president of the Chinese Medical Association.

He was married twice. His first wife, Ruth, was the daughter of Wong Nai Siong, a popular Chinese revolutionary leader. She died, along with two of their three sons, in the early 1900s. He then remarried and had four more children.
