He applied for NASA's third group of scientists but didn't have enough flight hours, and was too old for the fourth group; NASA later changed the age restriction.
He was selected as part of the "Original Nineteen" in 1966 but did not fly into space until 1985, serving as Mission Specialist.
He married Kathleen Maughan and had seven children.
He and Alfred Worden were in NASA's fifth group of astronauts.
