He attended the University of Chicago and later taught at Cornell, the Iowa Writers' Workshop, and the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
He was a founding editor of New Letters Magazine.
He settled in Tucson, Arizona with his wife Judy Ray.
He was inspired by the work of Ernest Hemingway.
