Daniel Yanofsky was born on March 25, 1925 in Poland. He moved to Canada with his family in 1929 and began playing chess at the age of nine. He won the Canadian Chess Championship in 1945 and went on to win it a total of seven times. He also won the British Chess Championship in 1951 and the U.S. Open Chess Championship in 1954. He was awarded the title of Grandmaster in 1964, becoming the first Canadian to receive the honour.
