Philadelphia Phillies slugger who was one of the top hitters in the National League in the early years after the dead-ball era.
He was spotted by a baseball scout in an exhibition baseball game between Notre Dame and a professional team; he turned the offer down to keep playing at ND but promised he'd consider Chicago first if he ever went pro.
He showed himself to be a power hitter, leading the National League four times in home runs.
He was born in Wadena, Indiana, a small town of only about 75 residents.
Before joining baseball he played college football at Notre Dane, on the same line as Knute Rockne.
