He hosted a radio show in Alaska while stationed there during his Service with the U.S. Air Force. He later attended the University of Tennessee and published two short stories in the student literary magazine.

He was born Charles McCarthy in Providence, Rhode Island. He was the son of an attorney and the third of six children. He was married to Lee Holleman from 1961 to 1962, Annie DeLisle from 1967 to 1981 and Jennifer Winkley from 1997 to 2006. He has two sons named Cullen and John.
