Remembered best for his paintings of New York, Chicago, and Philadelphia skyscrapers, this American Impressionist artist also painted Asian and European city scenes, as well as portraits, landscapes, and Renoir-like images of people at leisure. His best known works include Metropolitan Life Tower, Summer, and Taj Mahal, Afternoon.

He trained first at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in his native Philadelphia, and then at Paris' renowned Academie Julian. His first successful painting was a 1902 piece titled Broad Street, New York.

He displayed his work at numerous solo and group exhibitions and received a Silver Medal for watercolor paintings and a Gold Medal for oil paintings at the 1915 Panama–Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco, California.

His first marriage, to fellow painter Emma Lampert, lasted from 1897 until Lampert's 1920 death from tuberculosis. Nearly a decade later, he met and married Marie Henriette Frehsee and settled in Santa Barbara, California.

He was a contemporary of fellow American Impressionist painter T.C. Steele.
