He played at Jacksonville High School, and was selected to the 5-A All-State team his senior year. He committed to Memphis and appeared in all 12 games his freshman season in 2005, mostly on special teams. In 2006, he started in 10 out of his 12 appearances, and finished the year with 41 tackles and a blocked kick. During his junior year, McDonald was selected as a permanent captain, and was an honorable mention All-Conference USA pick.

In 2008, he tied a school record with four sacks in a game against Arizona State.
