French poet, Essayist, translator, Painter, and 2001 recipient of the prestigious Prix Goncourt. His numerous poetic works include La Mort à distance, Sept jours d'hier, and Le Nom et la Demeure.
He was the son of a French mother and a Spanish father. His early experience of the division of languages and cultures greatly influenced his poetic development.
He founded Argile, a magazine dedicated to poetry and painting, in 1973.
He married Denise Esteban, a Painter. Three years after her 1986 passing, he published a poetry collection entitled Elegie de la mort violente (Elegy of the Violent Death).
He translated many of Octavio Paz's works from Spanish into French.
