Indiana-born attorney who became the first woman to practice law on the West Coast of the United States.
She passed the California bar examination in 1868 and subsequently sued Hastings College of Law when the school refused to let her enroll because she was a woman.
Her name was given to the downtown Los Angeles Criminal court building (the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center).
She married Jeremiah Foltz, a farmer, when she was fifteen years old. Before Foltz left her in 1876, she gave birth to five children.
She was a descendant of American frontier hero Daniel Boone .
