After working for Korean Airlines in Europe, he obtained his M.B.A. from the International Institute for Management Development in Switzerland. Upon his return to South Korea in 1989, he became a director with Hanjin Investment & Securities, which is now known as Meritz Financial Group, of which he is the chairman.
