She worked as a waitress and clown while attempting to break into film and television, and eventually joined the prestigious Theatre West company in Hollywood. She also had a successful career as a casting director, casting a number of feature films and television series. As an actress, she was best known for her role as the acerbic Ferengi feminist "Ishka" on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993). She was also an acting coach and lyricist. In 2001, she had a daughter, but was diagnosed with advanced lung cancer four months later and passed away at the age of 45.

Adams was married to actor/writer Jim Beaver in 1989; their daughter Madeline was born in 2001.
