American Entrepreneur who founded the Kroger supermarket chain. The company began as The Great Western Tea Company and was re-named the Kroger Grocery and Baking Company in the early 1900s.
As a young boy, he worked in a drug store and on an Ohio farm.
He and his grocery store chain managed to survive the 1929 Stock Market Crash, partly through his creation of his own bank.
He and his nine siblings were born to an Ohio-based family of German immigrants.
He and Chun King foods founder Jeno Paulucci both operated successful food companies.
