The first Catholicos of the East after its reinstatement in India from 1912 to 1914.
In 1877 he was ordained as Mar Evanios Methrapolitan, a bishop, at Kunnamkulam Church by Patriarch Peter.
He was only in power for a year and a half but it is still considered an important period in the history of the Indian Malankara Orthodox Church.
He entered the church after his older brother, a deacon, died and his family wanted him to take his place.
