She spent much of her childhood in foster care as a result of her mother's heroin addiction. She learned to play piano and violin while living in a children's home in Schwalmtal-Waldniel, Germany.
She is the subject of the documentary Ayo Joy (2009).
Her father is Nigerian and her mother is Romani. She has children with singer Patrice Bart-Williams.
She was featured on the Boogie song "Won't Be the Same."
