Remembered for his Service in both the French and Indian War and the American Revolutionary War, this eighteenth-century military man also fought victoriously for the Colony of Virginia in Lord Dunmore's War, a 1774 conflict with the Mingo and Shawnee Native American tribes.
In his late childhood years, he emigrated from his native County Donegal, Ireland to Augusta County in the Colony of Virginia.
During the 1770s, he served in the Virginia House of Burgesses.
His marriage to Elizabeth Givens resulted in six sons (Samuel, Thomas, Andrew, John, Charles, and William) and one daughter (Anne). The family settled in an area that is present-day Roanoke County, Virginia.
In 1775, George Washington recommended Lewis for the position of Brigadier General in the Continental Army.
