Born Aleksandr Ivanovich Skorobogatko on September 25, 1967 on Gorlovka, Donetsk area (Ukraine), he took his Master's degree from the Plekhanov Russian Academy in 1996. The first mutual establishment of Skorobogatko and Ponomarenko was the formation of a small perfume factory in Ukraine. Then, they went on to set up the Russian General Bank in Moscow, which served the Novorossiysk port operation.

Following Russia's financial crisis in 1998, the business duo saw a great opportunity to acquire stakes in stevedoring companies at the port, which eventually led to the creation of Novorossiysk Commercial Sea Port. Once it was publicly listed in 2007, Skorobogatko and Ponomarenko got a windfall worth $1 billion.
