His 1929 hymn 'I'll Fly Away' struck a nerve and became one of the nation's most popular songs. It would go on to be covered by George Jones, to name a few.
He founded the Albert E. Brumley Sundown to Sunup Gospel Sing in Springdale, Arkansas, in 1969.
He grew up on a farm in Oklahoma, chopping and picking cotton before finding professional success. He and Goldie Edith Schell wed in 1931. His son Tom Brumley worked as a country music guitarist.
He began his career a generation after German composer Richard Wagner.
